LRE is identified in the U.S. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act as one of the six principles that govern the education of students with disabilities and other special needs. By law, schools are required to provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment that is appropriate to the individual student's needs.
"Least Restrictive Environment" means that a student who has a disability should have the opportunity to be educated with non-disabled peers, to the greatest extent appropriate. Inclusive education describes the successful education of students who have IEPs with the appropriate supports and supplementary aids and services necessary to achieve educational goals if placed in a setting with non-disabled peers.
TaC Educational Consultants are committed to assisting districts in determining the least restrictive environment (LRE) for each student. We will guide Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams to begin with the general education setting, with the use of Supplementary Aids and Services, before considering a more restrictive environment. Inclusive education describes the successful education of students who have IEPs with the appropriate supports and services to participate in and benefit from general classroom settings and other natural environments.
